Potty issues

In order to keep my blog "real" and assure you that life is not perfect at the Castleberry household - I want to post a question that is causing Scott and me great distress, anxiety, annoyance, frustration...you get the idea.

Landon has been potty trained for about 5 months now. He was easy-peasy to train (thanks mostly to his big sister's huge influence). However, the last two weeks have been a thorn in our sides. Landon wants to wait until the VERY.LAST.MOMENT. before he will go to the bathroom (or pull his pants down if he's outside...hey, whatever works!). He is having accidents daily. He is not completely emptying his bladder in his pants, but he is wetting himself because he waits and waits and waits.

He does his "potty dance" so we are all well aware that he needs to go to the potty, but he refuses to go. Ugh!

Anyone have advice? Should we start punishing him for these accidents since he's choosing not to go? Should we do some sort of reward system? We just don't know, and it's driving us crazy!

Put that boy back in full on diapers-not Pull Ups-diapers. Explain that as long as he keeps wetting his pants, he's not a big enough boy to wear underpants and needs to wear diapers like a baby. That may be enough of an incentive to go a little sooner.
I would stay away from "punishing" him as you don't want to associate elimination with punishment. But I would explain that the next time he wets his underwear because he waits, he will be put in a diaper.
But then, I almost donated my daughter to the Gypsies over potty training, so my advice may not be the best! :)

i'm sitting here laughing because...I THOUGHT WE WERE THE ONLY ONES!!! aawwww, what a relief! my little mr. mr. has been "potty trained" for a year (since he turned 2), but about every 3 months he'll just decide "nope, not gonna pee pee in the potty". frustrated is not even the word to use! i would LOVE to find a solution! oh, and get this...completely dry for 2 weeks straight while recovering from his tonsil surgery...even at night. even the day of his surgery when we put a pull-up on him to give him the day off. 1st day back at day care...THREE ACCIDENTS!!! and then the next day, completely dry. the next, 3 accidents. the next, dry. the next 1 accident. i mean, what the heck?!! ok, enough ranting. i'm thinking about on the weekends or during the evenings, if he has an "accident", then putting him in plastic underpants only and putting his shorts back on. surely it will be uncomfortable enough so he'll decide the dry underwear is MUCH better??? right? is that cruel? i'm trying to decide. and then i'd put the plastic underpants in his backpack and tell him they'll do that at daycare if he wets his pants (all though they wouldn't). but maybe the threat is enough? i dunno. we're at our wits end. so, not sure that was any help, but i feel better. :-)

I heard the diaper thing works like a charm. How much does he weigh? Maybe you could borrow a few diapers from someone. Hopefully it would only take a few and then you wouldn't have to buy any :) Let me know- Finn is in size 4 (which goes up to 37 pounds). You can have a few of mine if you want :)

we're trying the diaper thing, not sure it's working. he was perfectly fine with wearing a diaper. but, the catch is now he's asking to take it off and go potty. do i let him? or do i make him do his business in the diaper so he knows how uncomfortable it is?

Does he respond to praise/rewards? I was having trouble getting Christian to stay in his quiet time, so I made a sticker chart. If he stays in his room, he gets a star, if he's quiet, he gets a star, etc. Ten stars and he gets to draw a special treat from a jar (like popcorn and movie of your choice night, ice cream for dinner, etc. - simple things but not material things - too much clutter in our house already!). Just a thought. Each child is different, so it's just a matter of finding what will motivate him. :)
